5 Ways to practice Self-Love

I think we have all heard that we need to start practicing self-love in order to be more confident and happier, but for the longest time, I was not sure how I was supposed to do that. I’ve heard of giving yourself spa nights or doing yoga, but those never seemed to really do the trick for me. Luckily I have an incredible therapist that shared a few things to help me start loving myself! I started doing these five things over the past couple of weeks and it has helped my confidence, my energy, and my overall productivity! The best part is that they are super easy and don’t take a lot of time and effort.

  1. Say Affirmations

This one, I’m not going to lie, took a minute to get used to. I felt a little silly looking in the mirror and talking out loud to myself, but I promise it’s worth it! Taking a minute each day to tell yourself that you love yourself will make it a reality. Whenever I have some negative thoughts about myself, I just have to remember what I said earlier in the day. It’s helped me feel a lot more confident in myself. 

  1. Dress up for the day

With quarantine, it’s been really easy to live in sweats all day every day (and I am not saying that’s a bad thing). Sometimes it’s so nice to be in cozy clothes all day, but if you are feeling unmotivated and unproductive, getting ready for the day can help you tell yourself it’s time to work. It’s also nice to remind myself that I can look and feel really cute!

  1. Find something that lets you feel creative

This one was a big one for me! I always feel the happiest when I can create something. My new creative hobby has been making TikToks. I know it seems silly, but giving myself a few minutes a day to make something fun that doesn’t have big consequences has really helped me feel happier! I also always feel more motivated to accomplish those bigger tasks after I’ve made a few videos.  

  1. Start a gratitude journal 

Being grateful is something that has been proven over and over again to make people feel happier (If you want to learn more listen to this podcast). It allows us to look on the bright side, turning a bad day turn into a great one. You also don’t need a journal to do this. Whenever I think of something that I’m grateful for that day I’ll quickly type it into the notes app on my phone. My husband and I have made gratitude a part of our nighttime routine. Every night we tell each other one thing that we were grateful for that day and it’s been such a nice way to end the day.

  1. Read for a couple of minutes a day

I used to read for multiple hours a day when I was younger, but with life’s responsibilities sometimes it’s hard to find the time to read a few chapters in a book. I’ve started trying to read a few minutes every day, whether that means right before bed or when I need a quick break from school and work. Reading has been a way to let my mind go somewhere else for a minute. It gives you a break from getting constantly stimulated from a phone or even just from the To-Do-List everyone has in their heads. 

I can now say that practicing some self-love every day is so important for everyone to do. I have seen some incredible changes in my day-to-day life from doing these five things and I can’t wait to see how much more I’ll grow. I will say that everything doesn’t work for everyone, but I would challenge you to give these a try for just a week and see how much more confident you feel.
